Alpaca Heaven—where alpacas are little angels |
|
Welcome to Alpaca Heaven. Friendly alpacas, peaceful countryside, relaxing activities, and fiber in the colors of the rainbow - that is what makes this farm heavenly.. After settling in Michigan Ruth Affleck visited some alpacas and dipped her hand into their fleeces - after 40 years of spinning wool she was converted to alpaca fiber. Alpaca Heaven is a cute farm near Fowlerville where Ruth and her cat, Cheeky, raise show worthy, breeding alpacas. Ruth supervises alpaca husbandry and training while Cheeky oversees activities in the house.
Her breeding program objective is fine micron fleeces with generous density and staple while retaining good conformation and health. To do this mating has been done with Accoyo bloodlines including progeny from Caligula, Mr President and Matador. Ruth was raised on a farm in New Zealand where her father taught her animal husbandry and fiber evaluation and she learnt fiber crafting skills from her mother, aunts, and grandmothers. 4 years old, at her father’s knee, she knitted a sweater for her teddy bear and at 10 years old, finally big enough to reach the treadle, learnt spinning from her mother. From there nothing held her back from a lifetime of fiber skills and achievements. Ruth has received awards for her spinning, knitting, crochet, and weaving internationally. She offers classes in spinning and fiber arts in Michigan and enjoys seeing her students achieve their dreams. Ruth also provides demonstrations at events and has acted as Fleece Show Superintendent at Michigan International Alpaca Fest since 2006. She sells socks and yarn which has been harvested from her farm in Michigan and spinning wheels and celtic (triangle and square) looms for weaving.
